We were delighted to partner with the world-leading Titanic Belfast to present two striking performances in three very impressive spaces within their iconic building. Conducted by our Musical Director Matthew Quinn, these took place on Saturday 15th June and Sunday 16th June.
This eclectic and exciting mix of choral music from across the last few centuries focused on themes of emigration, exploration, and journey. The programme transported the audience on a physical and spiritual journey - drawing on music and poetry from Celtic, Scandinavian, and American folk traditions, as well as from the traditional choral repertoire.
The opening section, in the building's stunning atrium, focused on the physical journey - what we aspire to and what we leave behind. It included music traditionally associated with emigration such as Lovland’s beautiful ‘Sleepsong’, as well as pieces focussing on the departure from a loved one such as 'The Parting Glass'.
The middle section took place in the atmospheric and recently-opened Ship of Dreams and was devoted to music associated with water and crossing, with some special musical links to RMS Titanic.
The final section, presented in The Titanic Suite (featuring a replica of the Titanic Main Staircase and not normally open to the public) featured ‘Songs of Farewell’ by C.H.H Parry. This was a musical exploration of a spiritual journey, setting texts by metaphysical poets such as Henry Vaughan and John Donne.
